Giving all new meaning to the phrase pregnant pause, these four surprises may prompt you to put a pin in your sex life for now. But you don’t have to. If you have your doctor’s OK to proceed, then don’t let these situations keep you and your partner from hitting the sheets.
Cramps
That orgasm may come with a downside. During pregnancy, climaxing during sex may bring on mild uterine contractions which can feel similar to menstrual cramps. While it may be uncomfortable, there’s usually nothing to worry about and these cramps are not a sign that you’re going into labor. However, if you experience pain that doesn’t go away, intensifies or is accompanied by bleeding, be sure to give your health care provider a heads-up.
Spotting
There’s nothing scarier than seeing blood down there when you have a little one on the way. Rest assured, light spotting after sex is totally normal and, in the majority of cases, no cause for concern. Blame this post-coital spotting on softer cervical tissue during pregnancy. When should you call your doctor? If you start spotting for the first time in your second or third trimester.
Leaking
While you’re busy preparing for baby, your body is, too – and that includes your breasts. Well before your little one is set to arrive, your body may begin manufacturing colostrum, fluid that will nourish baby in his or her first few days. Why is this worth mentioning? Because once stimulated, your breasts may leak this liquid, causing quite the surprise for you and your partner. Worried about leakage interfering with your sex life? Keep your bra on during intercourse.
Sex drive
Blame it on surging hormones, a burgeoning belly or the fact that you get winded just tying your shoes – any way you look at it, pregnancy sex can seem like a hassle. If your sex drive has taken a nosedive now that you’re expecting, don’t despair. Between fatigue, morning sickness and an ever-changing body, it’s no wonder you’re not clamoring to hit the sheets. There’s more to intimacy than sex, so don’t beat yourself up if you need a break.
