Every baby is unique, and just like adults, they all sleep differently from one another. There are so many different factors that affect how a baby sleeps, it’s almost impossible to compare one to another – and I encourage you not to even try. Many times a family finds a rhythm that works for them. They’ve arranged sleeping places and routines that feel right to them, and they are happy. Then a friend, neighbor, book or internet post pulls the rug out from under them, and they realize that what they are doing is all wrong! They become frustrated, and they try new things. Instead of seeing improvement, though, sleep deteriorates.
But wait a minute! I just said they were happy and things worked for them. What happened? Their change of perception came from an outside source that created confusion and disillusionment. It forced them into doing things that were not right for them at all. It took a good situation and completely destroyed it. Do not let this happen to you.
Here’s how you define amazing sleep during the newborn months:
- All the places where your baby sleeps are safe.
- Your baby is feeding well, growing well and healthy.
- You are reading and responding to your baby’s cues (day and night).
- You are happy with the way things are working, or the progress you are making.
If this describes your newborn’s sleep situation then nothing needs to be changed, regardless of what anyone else has to say. Whenever anyone asks you, “How’s your baby’s sleep?” you can honestly answer: “Amazing!”
