Seven-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller is expecting her second child with her husband, John Falconetti.
While having a baby is news enough for some couples, Miller’s pregnancy is even more extraordinary because the former gymnast – who has a 3-year-old son, Rocco – was diagnosed two years ago with a rare form of ovarian cancer.
Miller discovered that she had the condition in late 2010 while trying to get pregnant for a second time. Her healthcare providers discovered a germ cell malignancy, which can frequently affect teenagers and women under 30.
In January 2011, Miller underwent a surgical procedure to remove the ovary with the tumor. She also underwent nine weeks of chemotherapy and is now cancer-free.
“I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to do some amazing things in my life, but being a mom is second to none,” Miller wrote on her website.
Miller earned two gold medals in 1996 at the Atlanta Games. At the 1992 Barcelona Games, she took home two silver and three bronze medals.
